About

The idea to start this blog may have come to me on a whim, but it is deeply rooted in my passion for two things: football (soccer) and data.

My name is Tunde Rockson, and I am working towards receiving my Bachelor's degree in science for Computer Science with a minor in Statistics. I am interested in a career which combines my passion for sports and data science/analytics. Currently, I am a senior at the University of Maryland so my expected graduation date is May 2021.

I was blessed with the privilege of traveling all over the world for much of my childhood and as I moved from region to region, football has always been a mainstay not only for me, but also for the members of the communities I have lived in. Whether it was amongst friends and family or complete strangers, a lively conversation always ensued once anything pertaining to football was mentioned. Football is a sport that transcends race, religion, and gender and that is one of the many reasons I am obsessed with it. This blog is, in a sense, an homage to the beautiful game.

The goal of this blog is simple: to investigate the periphery of football chiefly through statistical models and algorithms. With a sport as massive and global as football, it is no surprise that many aspects of the game are only observed on a surface level. Transfers, tactics, and even fixture results are often taken at face value when in reality, there is a plethora of information that can be garnered from observing the data provided to us by these events. As such, it is only natural that we try to unpack these findings in order to see what deeper meaning we can derive from them. I hope to be able to shed some light on some of football's unanswered questions from the past, present and future.
